Is a social media strategy right for your firm?

Larry Bodine is one of my favourite legal marketing experts and when I asked for permission to publish statistics from his excellent webinar he kindly agreed. The webinar provides an analysis of the comparitive effectiveness of social media in marketing for lawyers terms.  Blogs come out on top with a resounding 26.8% over Facebook at just 3.1% in one of the surveys analysed and Larry gives some tips for getting the most out of Linked in, such as join local groups that hold meetings in the real world, invite contacts to meet up and how to search for key executives in your target niche markets.

Marketing for lawyers usually involves a local strategy even if it is only part of the bigger picture.

The webinar referred to in this blog is by SMMU and specifically covers tools and techniques for the job such as Google Places and Pay Per Click advertising, while also considering some burning questions such as should you advertise in Yellow Pages and is Banner advertising dead? All in all, this webinar was ideal in terms of marketing for lawyers who have a local community presence and want to capitalise on it.

Yesterday I wondered how many lawyers were using Linkedin. A quick search on Google provided some interesting answers.

10 percent of attorneys said the use of online social networking such as Linked in resulted in new business according to the American Bar Association. This seemed quite low to me especially in light of the volume of lawyers actually using social media as a means of marketing for lawyers.

Educational Marketing for Lawyers is going to be huge

Over 15 million people in the UK watch 200 million videos daily. ComScore Video Metrix, January 2011 and we know that in 2009 1.4 million out of 3.4 million UK small business owners visit an online video site each month and are 32% more likely to visit an online video site than the average user. TGI Net

These statistics are available on Google's random stats pages and demonstrate how media can help you reach your audience online. As lawyers we can easily find content for our promotional marketing efforts and so we use educational marketing regularly as a means of reaching our audience. Most often we rely on ‘free seminars’ to reach the audience but if they are going online to YouTube in their droves then video blogging will be the next big thing for lawyers.
